Molecular Diagnostics

The use of modern Molecular Biology techniques, which are characterized by extremely high sensitivity and specificity, have proven indispensable components of today’s diagnostic medicine. Molecular Diagnostic methods provide immediate answers to key clinical questions. Some of the advantages of the Molecular Diagnostics approach are:

  • early stage detection of infection (e.g. HIV)
  • determination of  the stage of the disease (e.g. contagiousness)
  • assessment of patient response to treatment (e.g. reduction of viral load)
  • precise definition of the disease for personalization of therapy (e.g. microbe genotyping, pharmacogenomics)
  • detection and prevention of hereditary diseases(e.g. cystic fibrosis)
  • identification genetic alterations and correlation with phenotype (e.g. thrombophilia, genetic disorders, cancer)

The laboratory methods used by LOCUS MEDICUS are based on variations of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR, RT-PCR, RealTime PCR), DNA Sequencing, Chromatography (D-HPLC) and Electrophoresis (METAPHORE, ACRYLAMIDE, AGAROSE, DGGE). Our laboratory is equipped with top-of-the-line automated DNA-sequence analyzers (DNA Sequencers), used for precise DNA sequence analysis of hereditary diseases and genetic screening (e.g. BRCA mutations, Cystic Fibrosis etc.) as well as for DNA profiling and identification or DNA paternity tests. Furthermore,  the diagnostic use of DNA Microarrays, in conjunction with PCR allow rapid identification and genotyping of infectious agents(HPV, HHV, respiratory virus or sepsis detection panels etc.) as well as of human DNA polymorphisms (eg. genetic predisposition to osteoporosis and thrombophilia).

In conjunction with the necessary staff expertise these techniques allow us to detect and analyze the genome of viruses, bacteria and parasites as well as human genetic material in accordance with internationally accepted scientific protocols.
